About Tip Calculation

A tip (or gratuity) is an extra payment given to service workers as a sign of appreciation. In the US, tipping is widely expected in restaurants, salons, taxis, and many other service industries. Our calculator handles the math instantly so you can focus on enjoying the experience.

๐Ÿงฎ How to Calculate a Tip (Mental Math Tricks)

Quick mental math for common percentages:

  • 10% โ€” Move the decimal point one place to the left. Bill of $52.00 โ†’ tip = $5.20
  • 20% โ€” Calculate 10% then double it. $5.20 ร— 2 = $10.40
  • 15% โ€” Calculate 10%, then add half of that. $5.20 + $2.60 = $7.80
  • 18% โ€” Calculate 20% then subtract 10% of the 20% result. $10.40 โˆ’ $1.04 = $9.36
  • 25% โ€” Calculate 10% and multiply by 2.5. $5.20 ร— 2.5 = $13.00

Pro Tip

If the service is poor, 10โ€“12% is acceptable. For excellent service, 20โ€“25% shows genuine appreciation.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

A: Either is acceptable. Most Americans tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the full post-tax amount is also common and appreciated. Our calculator lets you add a tax rate to the bill before computing the tip.

Q: How do I split a bill unevenly?

A: This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate the full tip first, then divide the total bill by the amounts each person owes proportionally.

Q: What is an appropriate tip for bad service?

A: For genuinely poor service, 10% is the conventional minimum in the US. If the issue was beyond the server's control (e.g. kitchen delay), consider tipping normally and speaking with management.

Q: Is gratuity automatically added for large groups?

A: Many restaurants automatically add an 18โ€“20% service charge for parties of 6 or more. Always check your bill before leaving an additional tip.

Q: Do I tip on alcohol?

A: Yes. The standard 15โ€“20% tip applies to the full bill including drinks. Bartenders are often tipped $1โ€“2 per drink when ordering at the bar directly.
